बहुत समय पहले, नीलगिरि पहाड़ियों के नीचे एक शंगरीला नाम का राज्य था। वहां का राजा – ऋषिराज बहुत दयालु और मेहनती राजा था जिसकी वजह से पूरे राज्य में खुशहाली थी। शंगरीला राज्य में एक कोकिला नाम की कोयल थी जो बहुत मधुर गीत गाने के लिए जानी जाती थी। नीलगिरि पहाड़ी के दूसरी तरफ दूसरा राज्य था जिसका नाम डोंगरीला था। डोंगरीला राज्य शंगरीला के बिलकुल विपरीत राज्य था , वह का राजा जगतगुरु बहुत ही स्वार्थी और ईर्ष्यालु राजा था।
जमींदार को उसकी समस्या से निजात दिलाने के लिए एक साधु मदद के लिए आये । उन्होंने उसे लगातार तीन महीने तक एक पवित्र मंत्र का जाप करने के लिए कहा। तीन महीने तक जप करने के बाद जमींदार को एक जिन्न मिला गया। जिन्न ने बताया की उसे लगातार कुछ न कुछ करते रहना पड़ता है। अगर मालिक एक काम के खत्म होने के तुरंत बाद उसे दूसरा काम देने में विफल रहता है तो जिन्न उसे छोड़ देगा। लेकिन दूसरी तरफ अगर जिन्न ने कोई गलती की तो वह हमेशा के लिए जमींदार और उसकी पत्नी के साथ रहेगा। जमींदार बहुत खुश हुआ। जमींदार जो भी काम देता, जिन्न उसे मिनटों में ख़त्म कर लेता। पर एक दिन जमींदार की पत्नी ने जिन्न को ऐसा काम दे दिया जिसमे जिन्न से गलती हो ही गयी।
दोनों ने सावित्री की मदद करने की ठानी। सांप ने रस्सी से जुड़ कर रस्सी को लम्बा बना दिया और मेंढक घड़े में इस तरह बैठ गया की घड़े छेद बंद हो गया। सावित्री पानी निकाल कर ख़ुशी ख़ुशी घर चली गई।
